Bitumen and Its Different Grades

What is Bitumen?

Bitumen is a viscous, black, and sticky petroleum-based material primarily used in road construction, waterproofing, and industrial applications. It is produced through the distillation of crude oil and is known for its waterproofing, adhesive, and durability properties.

Different Grades of Bitumen

Bitumen is classified based on its penetration value, viscosity, or performance under specific conditions. The most common types include:

  1. Penetration Grade Bitumen (Most Common for Roads)
Classified by penetration value (hardness level) measured in 0.1 mm units.
The lower the penetration number, the harder and more durable the bitumen.
    Common grades & uses:
    Bitumen 40/50 → Heavy-duty roads, airport runways
Bitumen 60/70 → Highways, expressways (best for tropical climates)
Bitumen 80/100 → Provincial & city roads, waterproofing
  2. Viscosity Grade Bitumen (VG)
Classified by viscosity at 60°C (better for temperature variations).
Used in hotter climates and industrial applications.
    Common grades:
    VG-10 → Low-traffic roads, spraying applications
VG-30 → Highways & urban roads (widely used in India & hot climates)
    VG-40 → Heavy-duty pavements & industrial use
  3. Performance Grade (PG) Bitumen
Designed to withstand specific temperature ranges.
Used in regions with extreme temperature fluctuations.
Example: PG 64-22 (can handle +64°C max and -22°C min temperatures).
  4. Oxidized (Blown) Bitumen
Produced by blowing air into hot bitumen, making it harder & more resistant to aging.
Used for roofing, waterproofing, and industrial coatings.
Grades: Ranging from Bitumen 85/25 to 115/15.
  5. Cutback Bitumen
Bitumen mixed with solvents (kerosene, diesel) for cold weather applications.
Used for road repair & spray sealing.
  6. Emulsified Bitumen
Bitumen mixed with water & emulsifiers for cold applications.
Used in pothole repairs, surface treatments, and rural roads.

Choosing the Right Bitumen Grade

  • Highways & heavy traffic roads → 60/70 or VG-30
  • Urban roads & general paving → 80/100 or VG-10
  • Roofing & waterproofing → Oxidized bitumen
  • Cold weather construction → Cutback or Emulsified bitumen

Bitumen Supplier Cambodia

Which grade of bitumen is most important in Cambodia

Why Bitumen 60/70 is Key in Cambodia:

  1. Climate Suitability
Cambodia has a tropical monsoon climate—hot, humid, and rainy.
Bitumen 60/70 is a medium-hard penetration grade, ideal for handling both high daytime temperatures and heavy rainfalls without deforming or cracking easily.
  2. Road Construction & Rehabilitation
The Cambodian government, under support from development agencies (e.g., ADB, China Aid), uses Bitumen 60/70 for:
    National highways
    Provincial roads
    Urban roads and airport runways
It’s specified in most road project tenders.
  3. Import Dominance
Cambodia imports 100% of its bitumen, mainly from:
    Thailand
    Vietnam
    Singapore
    Iran (via indirect routes)
  • Bitumen 60/70 is the standard grade available and stocked by local traders.

Secondary Grades Used (Less Frequently):

  • Bitumen 80/100 – Sometimes used in cooler or shaded areas, or as a blending component.
  • Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) – For highways or bridges, especially donor-funded projects with high-performance specifications.

Key Ports for Bitumen Grades Cambodia Discharge

  1. Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (PAS)
Location: Southwest Cambodia, Gulf of Thailand.
    Main commercial seaport in Cambodia.
Primary port for bitumen imports in drums, bulk, or ISO tanks.
Well-connected to Phnom Penh and major road construction sites.
Handles most cargo from Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam.
  2. Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP)
Location: Inland port on the Mekong River.
Used for containerized cargo and bitumen in drums or IBCs, especially from Vietnam via barge transport.
Bitumen is transshipped from Ho Chi Minh City or Vung Tau Port (Vietnam).
Convenient for distribution in central Cambodia and nearby provinces.
  3. Alternative/Transit Ports
Cambodia is land-linked with Thailand and Vietnam, so bitumen is also trucked in via:
    Poipet Border (from Thailand)
    Bavet Border (from Vietnam)

Domestic and foreign Bitumen Supplier Cambodia

Cambodia does not produce bitumen locally—there are no domestic refineries that manufacture penetration-grade bitumen. However, several local importers and distributors handle storage, repackaging, and delivery of imported bitumen for road construction projects.

Key Local Bitumen Distributors & Traders:
These companies import and supply Bitumen 60/70, mainly in drums or bulk, to infrastructure firms:

  1. SCG Cambodia Co., Ltd.
Local branch of Siam Cement Group (Thailand)
Supplies construction materials and occasionally facilitates bitumen logistics
  2. Meng Seng Import Export Co., Ltd.
Active in importing bitumen drums from Thailand and Vietnam
    Supplies to provincial infrastructure contractors
  3. Chip Mong Insee Cement Corporation
Though primarily a cement supplier, they also partner with infrastructure developers who require bitumen
  4. Worldbridge Group Logistics
Handles bitumen transport and customs clearance through Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh ports
