Cutback Bitumen SC-70 Description
Cutback bitumen SC-70 is a type of bitumen that has been liquefied by adding a solvent, usually kerosene, to reduce its viscosity for easier application. SC-70 specifically refers to the kinematic viscosity of the cutback bitumen at 70°C.
Cutback asphalt is an asphalt cement that has a solvent or distillate such as gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, or naphtha added to make the asphalt liquid at ambient temperatures and improve its ability to coat aggregates. Two letters followed by a numerical digit designate or name a cutback asphalt.
Cutback Asphalt SC-70 can contain between 12 and 40 percent distillate. The high demand for the distillates to be used in energy applications and ever-increasing air quality regulations have caused a steady decline in the use of cutback asphalt.
The SC liquid asphalt may be obtained by fluxing an asphalt cement with a less volatile distillate such as gas oil. The SC-70 and SC-250 grade cutback asphalts are very similar to residual refinery products that are used as heavy fuel oils such as bunker C or Number six fuel oils. These SC cutback materials, whether straight run or fluxed with a relatively non-volatile material such as gas oil, are also known as "road oils".
Cutback Asphalt SC-70 Applications
Cutback Asphalt SC-70 has several applications in road construction and maintenance:
- Prime Coat: It can be used as a prime coat to prepare the base surface before the application of asphalt layers. The prime coat helps to bind the granular base layers and provides a waterproof barrier.
- Tack Coat: SC-70 can serve as a tack coat to promote adhesion between asphalt layers. It is applied to the existing asphalt surface before overlaying with a new layer to ensure proper bonding and prevent slippage.
- Surface Treatment: It can be used for surface treatments such as chip seals or slurry seals to protect and extend the life of the road surface. The Cutback Asphalt is applied as a binder to which aggregate is added, creating a durable wearing surface.
- Patching and Repair: SC-70 can also be used for patching and repair of damaged asphalt surfaces, providing a temporary or permanent solution depending on the extent of the damage.

Packing of Cutback Bitumen SC-70
Packing of cutback bitumen SC-70 is in the new thick steel drum on the pallet to prevent any leak inside of container also bulk in bitutainers and tanker.
Safety of Cutback Asphalt SC-70
Safety precautions should be taken when handling Cutback Asphalt SC-70, as it contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is flammable. Here are some safety considerations:
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, goggles, and protective clothing, to prevent skin contact and eye irritation.
- Ventilation: Work in well-ventilated areas or use proper respiratory protection to avoid inhalation of fumes.
- Fire Safety: Keep away from open flames, sparks, and sources of ignition, as cutback bitumen is flammable. Store and handle it in accordance with local fire regulations.
- Spill Cleanup: In case of spills, contain the area immediately and use absorbent materials to clean up the spilled material. Avoid releasing it into the environment or water sources.
- Storage: Store cutback bitumen SC-70 in tightly sealed containers away from heat and direct sunlight. Follow manufacturer guidelines for storage temperature and conditions.
- Handling: Handle the material with care to prevent spills or splashes. Avoid prolonged skin contact and wash hands thoroughly after handling.
- Disposal: Dispose of waste material according to local regulations. Avoid contaminating soil or water sources.
