What Is Rubber Process Oil?
Rubber Process Oil (RPO) is an aromatic-rich fraction obtained from the vacuum distillation of crude petroleum, known in refining terms as Raffinate. Its mixed-ring carbon structure and double-bond content give it strong solvency and compatibility with rubber polymers, which is why it is used industry-wide as a processing aid and extender oil in rubber compounding.
During compounding, RPO reduces the viscosity of raw rubber, improves dispersion of carbon black and other fillers, and adds flexibility to the vulcanized product. Heavy RPO in particular is developed as an extender oil for styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) production — dark in colour, with strong compatibility across most rubber types, used where colour is not a critical parameter, such as tyres, conveyor belting, and battery cases.
