WHITE SPIRIT

WHAT IS WHITE SPIRIT?

White spirit, also known as mineral spirits or mineral turpentine, is a petroleum-derived solvent commonly used in painting and decorating. It is used to thin oil-based paints and clean paint brushes and equipment. White spirit is also employed as a degreasing and cleaning agent in various industrial and household applications. It is colorless, volatile, and typically less toxic than other solvents like turpentine, although it can still pose health risks if inhaled or ingested.

It is a mixture of aliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons, typically obtained from the distillation of crude oil. White spirit or mineral spirit is a clear liquid based on kerosene (kerosene), which can refer to 400, 402, 403, 406 and 410 solvents. These materials are composed of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, which have their own properties and odor based on the percentage of aromatic compounds present. These solvents are divided into two categories, high aromatic and low aromatic, based on the percentage of aromatic compounds present. Among the types of white spirit solvents, 402 solvent has special importance and applications. They have a melting point of -40 degrees Celsius and a boiling point range of 150-200 degrees Celsius.

Key characteristics and uses of white spirit include

Key Characteristics of White Spirit:

  1. Colorless Liquid : White spirit is a clear, colorless liquid.
  2. Volatile : It evaporates quickly at room temperature.
  3. Low Toxicity : Compared to other solvents, it has relatively low toxicity, though it can still cause health issues if inhaled or ingested.
  4. Non-corrosive : Safe to use on most materials without causing damage.
  5. Solvent Properties : Effectively dissolves oils, greases, and resins.

         Uses of White Spirit:

  1. Paint Thinner : Primarily used to thin oil-based paints and varnishes.
  2. Brush Cleaner : Cleans paint brushes and other equipment used with oil-based paints.
  3. Degreasing Agent : Used to remove grease and grime from metal parts and machinery.
  4. Stain Remover : Can remove certain stains from fabrics and surfaces.
  5. Fuel : Occasionally used as a fuel in portable stoves and heaters.
  6. Adhesive Remover : Helps in removing adhesives, labels, and stickers.
  7. Surface Preparation : Used in preparing surfaces for painting by removing dust and contaminants.

WHAT ARE THE WHITE SPIRIT GRADES

White spirit is categorized into different grades based on its refining process and intended use. The three main grades of white spirit are:

  1. Type 0
    –  Description : The least refined grade.
    –  Characteristics : Has a higher aromatic content.
    –  Uses : Primarily used in industrial applications where higher solvency power is needed, such as in cleaning and degreasing.
  2. Type 1
    –  Description : A slightly more refined grade.
    –  Characteristics : Lower aromatic content than Type 0 but higher than Type 2.
    –  Uses : Used as a general-purpose solvent for paints, varnishes, and as a cleaning agent.
  3. Type 2
    –  Description : The most refined grade.
    –  Characteristics : Contains the lowest level of aromatic hydrocarbons, making it less odorous and less toxic.
    –  Uses : Preferred for applications requiring low odor and toxicity, such as in household cleaning products, paints, and varnishes for indoor use.

EVERYTHING ABOUT SOLVENT 402

Solvent 402
Solvent 402 is a specific type of white spirit with particular characteristics and uses. It falls under the category of aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents.

           Characteristics of Solvent 402:

  1. Aliphatic Hydrocarbons : Composed primarily of aliphatic hydrocarbons.
  2. Low Odor : Low aromatic content resulting in low odor.
  3. Low Toxicity : Less toxic than other solvents with higher aromatic content.
  4. High Flash Point : Safer to use due to a higher flash point.
  5. Controlled Evaporation Rate : Suitable for various industrial applications.

           Uses of Solvent 402:

  1. Paint Thinning : Used to thin oil-based paints and varnishes.
  2. Degreasing : Effective for cleaning and degreasing metal surfaces.
  3. Adhesive Formulations : Used in the formulation of adhesives and sealants.
  4. Surface Cleaning : Cleans surfaces in preparation for painting or coating.
  5. Industrial Applications : Used in various industrial processes requiring a low-odor, low-toxicity solvent.

White spirits and Solvent 402 are versatile petroleum-derived solvents used in a variety of applications, particularly in painting, cleaning, and industrial processes. White spirits come in different grades (Type 0, Type 1, and Type 2) based on their refining process and aromatic content, with each grade suited to specific applications. Solvent 402 is a type of white spirit known for its low odor, low toxicity, and suitability for a range of industrial uses.

WHITE SPIRIT APPLICATIONS (SOLVENT 402, 404, 406)

The applications of Solvent 402 do not end with the above, and among its other uses is its use in making fatty epoxies, varnishes and oil-based polishes. It is also widely used to remove oil, grease and fat from metal surfaces and in the automotive industry.

Solvent 402 is used as an incendiary agent for burning wood. Dry cleaners use this solvent for dry cleaning, which is a suitable and less dangerous alternative to xylene and gasoline. Since this solvent does not dissolve in water, it is used in the process of spraying, wood and paint protection, nail polish production, and asphalt production.

Solvent 402 also has domestic uses. Washing tools and machine parts, lighting fire and coal, removing glue marks and many other cases are examples of halal 402 household uses.

WHAT IS SOLVENT 404 ?

          Solvent 404

Solvent 404 is a type of white spirit, also known as a petroleum-derived solvent, used in various industrial and household applications due to its effective solvent properties. It falls between Solvent 402 and Solvent 406 in terms of refinement, aromatic content, and toxicity.

WHAT IS SOLVENT 406 ?

Solvent 406

Solvent 406 is a type of white spirit known for its higher aromatic content, making it more effective in applications requiring strong solvency power. It is typically used in industrial settings where heavy-duty cleaning and degreasing are necessary.
