Bitumen Emulsion MS-2h

Anionic Bitumen Emulsion MS-2h Definition

Anionic Bitumen Emulsion MS-2h is an anionic water-based medium setting emulsified asphalt containing minimum 60% Bitumen.
For anionic and emulsions, there are several grades of different breaking characteristics. Rapid-setting emulsions are used for surface dressing, while medium or slow-setting emulsions are used for ‘mixtures’, that is mixed with aggregate either in concrete-type mixers or in situ. Rapid-setting emulsions are not used for mixtures because they would tend to set during the mixing process and clog the mixer. Generally, in making mixtures, the finer the aggregate used, the slower setting the emulsion that has to be used. Therefore, stone mixtures require medium-setting emulsions and sand mixtures require a slow-breaking emulsion. With anionic emulsions, the breaking process is predominantly by evaporation of the water in the emulsion continuous phase. Because of this, anionic emulsions are susceptible to temperature and humidity in terms of their breaking properties.

An Anionic emulsion has a negative charge, most of the things in the world are Anionic and that is why the majority of Research and Development, formulating, and lab testing has been done in the Industrial Coatings Industry to make coatings from Anionic systems. When an Anionic emulsion is mixed with a Cationic emulsion a strong bond develops and the result is the changing of the substance to a solid. This result is not ideal to be used as a coating because it cannot be applied to substrates.

Anionic Bitumen Emulsions MS-2h Applications

Anionic bitumen emulsion MS-2h (Medium Setting – Type 2 hard) is a versatile road construction and maintenance material. It contains bitumen droplets dispersed in water with an anionic (negatively charged) emulsifier, making it especially suitable for use with granite, limestone, and siliceous aggregates. The “hard” (H) grade indicates higher viscosity and durability compared to standard MS-2.

Here are the main applications of MS-2h anionic bitumen emulsion:

Prime Coat on Granular Bases

  • Used as a primer on water-bound macadam (WBM) or granular surfaces before applying hot mix asphalt.
  • It binds dust particles, stabilizes the base, and improves adhesion between layers.

Tack Coat between Asphalt Layers

  • Applied as a bonding coat between existing pavement and new asphalt overlays.
  • Ensures strong interlayer adhesion, preventing slippage or delamination.

Surface Dressing (Single or Double Coat)

  • Ideal for medium-traffic roads and rural highways.
  • Provides a protective waterproof layer and improves skid resistance.

Patch Repair and Maintenance

  • Used for pothole patching, edge repair, and crack sealing on existing bituminous pavements.
  • The medium-setting property allows sufficient time for proper mixing and compaction before full curing.

Cold Mix Asphalt Production

  • Suitable for producing cold mix asphalt used in maintenance works where heating equipment is not available.
  • Ensures good coating and workability of aggregates.

Dust Control and Surface Sealing

  • Acts as a dust suppressant for unpaved roads or industrial areas.
  • Forms a thin film that seals the surface against moisture penetration.
