Bitumen C450

Description

Bitumen C450 is a paving grade bitumen manufactured to comply with AS2008 Table 2.2 and is suitable for use in heavily trafficked asphalt.

Bitumen C450 bitumen is built for use in high-stress environments and regions with extreme heat. It is used in making asphalt pavements and structures. With its high viscosity, Class 450 Bitumen is ideal for highways, intersections, and industrial areas that endure heavy traffic loads and hot temperatures, offering exceptional resistance to softening and deformation.
Bitumen C450 is known for its exceptional heat resistance and high durability on roads in extreme climates. It has generally been used in Northern Australia, tropical regions, and desert areas. It is optimized for hot and extreme heat climates where roads must endure significant stress and heat. It prevents surface rutting and deformation under heavy loads.

Applications

Bitumen C450 was originally a development from the Roads and Maritime Services in New South Wales and was incorporated into the 2012 revision of the national bitumen standard AS2008. Viva Bitumen C450 has been formulated to meet the viscosity requirements of AS2008 Table 2.2 whilst retaining excellent asphalt workability characteristics. The target applications are asphalt wearing courses and basecourses for heavily trafficked pavements.

  1. Road Construction:
Asphalt for High-Performance Roads: Bitumen C450 is used in the production of asphalt mixes for roads and highways, where high durability, flexibility, and performance are required, particularly in areas with heavy traffic loads.
Paving Highways and Airports: Ideal for paving high-traffic roads, highways, and airport runways where resistance to wear and temperature variations is critical.
  2. Waterproofing:
Roofing Membranes: Used in the production of high-quality waterproof roofing membranes, providing a durable water barrier that is highly resistant to weathering and water penetration.
Foundation Waterproofing: Effective in protecting underground structures, foundations, and basements from water damage by forming a flexible and long-lasting water seal.
  3. Industrial Coatings:
Protective Coatings for Steel and Concrete: Bitumen C450 is often used to coat steel and concrete surfaces, offering protection against corrosion, moisture, and other environmental factors.
Pipe Coatings: Used as a protective layer for pipelines, especially for those exposed to moisture or extreme environmental conditions.
  4. Asphalt for High-Traffic and Heavy Duty Applications:
Heavy Duty Roads: Suitable for roads subjected to heavy vehicle loads, providing long-term performance and preventing rutting or deformation under stress.
Airports and Industrial Pavements: Due to its resistance to high temperatures and traffic stresses, Bitumen C450 is widely used for airport runways and heavy-duty industrial pavements.
  5. Modified Bitumen Production:
    Polymer-Modified Bitumen (PMB)
: Bitumen C450 serves as a base for polymer-modified bitumen products, which provide enhanced elasticity and durability in extreme temperatures.
Rubber-Modified Bitumen (CRMB): C450 can also be modified with crumb rubber to produce rubberized bitumen, which offers better durability, fatigue resistance, and weathering properties.
  6. Asphalt Pavement Sealers:
Sealant for Road Surfaces: Bitumen C450 is used in sealants for road surfaces, helping to protect against wear, oxidation, and water penetration, enhancing the lifespan of roads.
